Port Hills Fire

On Monday the 13th of February 2017 a pair of fires broke out on the Port Hills of Christchurch.  Firefighters battled the flames for multiple days and when a change in wind direction created favourable conditions for the fire on Wednesday the 15th of February the two fires merged and drastically increased in size.  Not long after a state of emergency was declared and the fire threatened the residents of several urban suburbs.  With the helicopters unable to fight the fire during the night, the fire spread rapidly culminating in it's peak during the night.  This photo shows the front of the fire spreading from Sugarloaf on the left to Westmorland on the right.

This image gained a lot of attention by the media and the public as it showed how terrible and dangerous the situation really was and put the size of the fire into perspective.  It was displayed by numerous New Zealand and international media agencies and stands to be one of the iconic depictions of this moment in Christchurch history.
