Noir Rays

Mount Rainier National Park, Washington, USA (2018)

Something I love about using telephoto lenses for landscape photography is the ability to compress the image and really bring the hero of the image front and centre.  It allows for the geometry of the peaks and valleys to speak for themselves and removes distracting elements.

Black and white processing is another way to remove distractions.  Sometimes the colours of the scene just don't quite work together and can distract the eye in a direction that doesn't create flow through the landscape.  Going with black and white further emphasises the geometry and composition as the main feature.

This view from Mount Dege in Mount Rainier National Park was one such example where using the telephoto allowed me to really focus in on these mountains where the dawn light was just beginning to poke into the valleys.  The light hit the morning mist and created some beautiful rays.  I knew while taking this photo that black and white editing would add another dimension to the image and let the powerful lines of the sun rays really stand out.
