Gibralta Rock

Port Hills, Christchurch, New Zealand (2017)

I don't tend to shoot portfolio level shots around the places I live very often.  I'm not sure why, but I guess it is because I have lived in these areas long enough that it just feels like home and not a place I would actively seek out portfolio photos.  I've been very fortunate to live in such beautiful locations, and it can become easy to take these locations for granted when you see them day in and day out.

Shortly after a trip around the South Island I decided to spend some time focusing on my home area around Christchurch.  I would often head up to the Port Hills but wouldn't take a camera with me.  I continued to go up there as I normally would, but decided to have the camera in the car with me in case the conditions ever looked favorable.

On this particular evening I could see that I was in for an impressive sunset, so I headed to Gibralta Rock.  It's a spot I often head to and admire and I thought it would make for an interesting mid ground while the sky burnt with the late evening sun.

This experience changed the way I travel.  These days I almost always have my camera gear in the back of my car just in case I come across a beautiful scene wherever I am.
